PHARMACOLOGICAL STRATEGY

Atropine is considered the most effective intervention for progressive myopia treatment. This drug has been used in ophthalmology for diagnostic purposes for a long time. In regards to myopia control, atropine has confirmed its unique capabilities in many clinical studies over the past decade.

On the other hand, there is no clear understanding how atropine is able to slow down myopia progression.

Long-term daily instillation of low dose atropine was proven to be able to significantly slow down myopia progression. This indicates its efficacy; however, doctors and researchers are yet to answer many questions. The most relevant studies involving atropine are focused on determining its optimal concentration. The use of atropine is associated with side effects. Apart from the pronounced effect on the eyes, it also has a systemic effect on the body as a whole. For these reasons, the development of a clear algorithm for a long-term therapeutic atropine use (its safest concentration) and a gradual withdrawal from therapy without withdrawal effect remain extremely relevant today.

Important! In the Russian Federation, the use of atropine is prohibited in children and adolescents with progressive myopia, according to the clinical recommendations for myopia treatment.
