BEHAVIORAL STRATEGY

Behavioral strategy of myopia control implies two key factors:

The observance of such simple and yet such difficult to follow recommendation as an increase in outdoor activities has a scientific justification. The natural light helps increase production of dopamine which is said to affect whether the child’s eyes will elongate at a normal pace or excessively fast.

Time that children spend doing near work activities certainly plays a negative role in myopia development and progression. Their immature visual system is not designed for early excessive near work activities. Nevertheless, it is impossible to exclude such activities or critically reduce them during school age.

Therefore, it is necessary to shift the emphasis from prohibiting schoolchildren from using digital devices, to following the adequate schedule. This means that for every 40 minutes of near visual work there should be at least a 10-minute break and that there should be time for outdoor activities.

Perhaps, these are the only recommendations regarding myopia control that do not require doctor’s advice. Anyone can integrate them into the family’s daily schedule right now.
